Alice: A Variation on Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland

Plague Mask Players

A new take on the classic tale through the imaginative perspective of Alice Pleasance Liddell. We journey through her imagination within the context of a conversation between her and her teacher, Charles Dodgson (alias Lewis Carroll) as she works to overcome her parents' stifling indifference and neglect. Alice confronts her deepest fears in the form of an imagined ensemble of emotionally complicated storytellers, including the Jabberwocky, Time personified, and a Twin at peace with their missing half. Through these characters, Alice’s world turns technicolor as she discovers her innate creative power on the other side of the looking glass.

Available Roles

We are seeking female-identifying and/or non-binary artists who represent diverse ethnicities, body types, disabilities, and ages.

Actors will portray multiple characters of various gender identities.

In regards to the character descriptions – they outline the characters as described in the script. They do not aim to be all-encompassing representations of who might fill these roles. We aim for an expansive and deliberate casting process. We acknowledge that some of the characters in the script are traditionally presented as either male or female (using he/him or she/her pronouns) while others are open to the actor’s interpretation. Please let us know on your audition form what you are comfortable portraying.

Alice and Lewis Carroll are the only two tracks that will not have any additional characters. The rest of the characters are played by an ensemble, most of whom will be on the stage for the majority of the play and are constantly shifting to form new objects, animals, and people.

Sensitive Content for Actors

This show explores themes of verbal child abuse and neglect as well as scenes depicting the abuse. There are also portrayals of schizophrenia, grief, and smoking. No eating or drinking, strobe lights, stage blood, kissing, intimacy, or nudity. The script can be perused upon request prior to and at auditions.

A digital script is available upon request. We will have a physical copy at auditions as well. (Email pmpauditions@gmail.com to request)

Of all the strange things that Alice saw in her journey, this was the one she always remembered most clearly. Years afterward she could bring the whole scene back again, as if it had been only yesterday...Years afterward she could bring the whole scene back again, as if it had been only yesterday...Alice found herself just outside of an enormous palace; two rose trees stood near the entrance. The roses growing on it were white, pure white like the color of a new, blank piece of paper. As she went on, she seemed to move very easily, as though she were spinning through the air with no effort at all. (To herself) Curiouser and curiouser. (Continuing to read) Alice thought this a very strange thing. “Curiouser and curiouser,” she said. She walked past the courtiers, past the moat, over the drawbridge, past the guard-post, down a very long and very grand staircase, and at last reached the bottom of the tower, looking up to see someone waiting at the very top...

Suddenly I have all these ideas just falling into my mind like raindrops or meteors. I don’t even have to think about it. And I have a hundred thousand questions that look exactly like emeralds stitched together with solid gold thread, and I want to know the answer to every single one. Things I’ve always wondered about but never really took the time to find the answers to. For instance, why don’t all books have pictures? And who makes the pictures, when they are there? Where will I go when I die? Will I realize it when it’s happening, or will it be like falling asleep? What will happen after that? Will I still be able to think? Will I still see my mother and father? Will I float above everyone else like a cloud? When I dream, do my eyes really see those things I dream about...
