When young Alice finds herself in a strange world where everything seems upside down, she must find her way home…and find herself along the way. As she travels through Wonderland, she encounters all of the iconic characters that audiences have come to love: including the ever-tardy White Rabbit, the grinning Cheshire Cat, a cool Caterpillar, the wacky Mad Hatter, and the hot-tempered Queen of Hearts.

• Please dress appropriately and expect to have your photo taken after you have signed in.
• Please do not bring props to the audition.
• Also, the casting committee requests that you do not wear costumes or face paint.
• A dancing audition is required for all performers.
• Auditioners should bring jazz shoes if you have them.
• If you don’t own jazz shoes, please bring comfortable sneaker type shoes you’re able to move in.
• Also bring Tap or Ballet Shoes if you have them.
• Be sure to bring a water bottle and snack.

Singing

Everyone should prepare “Alice’s Theme” and “Painting the Roses Red”-which will be sung in small groups. Also, please prepare one song from the show if you are interested in a featured role. Auditioners may be asked to vocalize to determine vocal range. Be sure to add in characterization and mannerism that fit the character while bringing your best voice forward.

Dancing

You will be asked to perform a short dance routine (in groups) during the auditions. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes you can dance in-Bring Tap and Ballet Shoes if you have them.

We will have a general dance audition during the open auditions, but we also are wanting to have some tap numbers in the show-More than Likely for the Mad Hatter and/or March Hare. We would love to see any tap skills that you all have. Since not everyone has tap experience, we will leave it up to you to perform any combos as part of your audition. After your song -each child will be given the option to perform tap combos that you know. Bring your most basic moves or your most advanced move-we will leave it up to you. It will not be performed with music-just the moves you know, i.e shuffle, tap step, or a bridge or other moves you know. So, please bring your tap shoes-wear them during the audition and we will ask if you have a tap combo to share.

We would also like to see Ballet Dancing and Tumbling skills you have in the same manner as the Tap. We will have a time to show off these moves. Ballet dancing will be focused on the caterpillar and flowers and Tumbling skills will be focused to the Cheshire Cat trio.

Acting

All actors are required to audition with one side that will be given to you during the Audition. We will provide in advance for you to get familiar with these and you are welcome to memorize but it is not required. Please be prepared to bring characterization to each character you are asked to read. So review in advance and decide on tone of voice, mannerism etc that you would bring to each character if you are asked to read for that character.

Family Volunteer Expectations

Parent and family participation is a natural part of the community theatre experience. We expect each family to contribute approximately 20 hours to the production prior to performances (set building, work inside the theatre, show promotion, etc.) plus working before, during, or after most performances. Volunteer positions will be reviewed at the first rehearsal.

Rehearsals

• Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays
• First rehearsal is Tuesday, January 7th.
• Attendance by all cast and crew at the first rehearsal is required and nonnegotiable.
• Generally, weekday rehearsals will be from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm.
• An in-depth rehearsal schedule is provided at the first rehearsal.
• Additional rehearsals may be called, if needed.
• Rehearsals may be limited to small groups with various arrival and dismissal times.
• Rehearsal attendance is crucial, but no absences are allowed unless disclosed in registration form conflicts.
• Inability to attend rehearsals affects casting eligibility.

Alice, Small Alice, Tall Alice

Differently sized versions of the show’s titular inquisitive and intrepid young girl. On a journey of self-discovery, the adventurous Alice has the heart of an explorer and the instincts of a leader. Even when frustrated or confused, she’s awfully charming. Alice and Small Alice both sing solos whereas Tall Alice has spoken lines only. Height will play a part in the casting of these roles, but a strong singing voice and good interpretation of the character will play the largest part.

Cheshire Cat (1, 2, 3)

The perpetually grinning narrator of the story is a magical feline who doesn’t always agree with itself. These roles are played by three females who can tumble and stunt with each other as a group. Mischievous and mysterious actors who can play to the audience and Alice.

White Rabbit

The fussy royal trumpeter is ever worried that they are running late. This character should exude nervous energy through constant fidgety movements.

Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee

Twins with an exhausting enthusiasm for property manners and a penchant for getting very confused. Superfluous silly, the Tweedles are a comedy duo like Abbott & Costello and Laurel and Hardy, so comedic timing is key. A bizarre but clear singing voice is a plus:)

Mad Hatter

The life of the party has a penchant for making up the rules. Delightfully eccentric, the Mad Hatter has a flair for the theatrical and very little focus. Must be a tapper-take part in the Tap Audition

March Hare

The Mad Hatter’s chummy sidekick, enjoys a good party. Just slightly more rational than the Mad Hatter, the March Hare lets the frenetic Hatter lead the way, while eer passing up the chance to play a silly game. Must be a tapper-take part in the Tap Audition

Caterpillar

The Wonderland character who is the most helpful to Alice on her whimsical quest. This show-stopping, magnetic, soon-to-be butterfly should have a jazzy tone to her voice and also the grace of a butterfly in her movement. Must be a ballet dancer-be part of the Ballet Audition

DoDo Bird

The imperious captain of the Queen’s Navy, leads the caucus race. Should have a commanding presence with a flair for the mysterious to be consistent with wonderland

Flowers

Including Rose, Lily, Petunia, Daisy and Violet. A stuck up group of pleasing perennials, These are not nice flowers, so bring on your mean girl vibe! These actors will need to be strong dancers and strong singers that command confidence at all times. Prefer to be part of tap and ballet audition-but not required

Queen of Hearts

The hotheaded and overbearing ruler of Wonderland. Needs to portray mean monarchy with theatrical grandiosity. Needs to be a strong singer with a commanding voice

King of Hearts

The Queen’s husband has a timid demeanor until taking expert command at Alice’s Trail

Doorknob

The gatekeeper of Wonderland-and annoyed with the intrusion of Alice. Looking for someone with a tendency to the dramatic.

Mathilda

Alice’s scholarly sister. Though she acts as though she has outgrown it, Mathilda has an admiration for her younger sister’s wild imagination. Looking for a classic Big Sister type who is a bit bossy but soft spoken when imparting sisterly advice.

Friends 1 and 2

Mathilda’s judgmental friends who are older than Alice and have no time for her games of make believe. Bring good volume and attitude matching the Flowers in Wonderland

Royal Cards

Anxious members of the Queen’s royal contingent, Because the Queen of hearts sends them into a royal panic whenever she’s near, we are looking for an actor who can physicalize fear in an exaggerated way.
