Kenny's Angels

Out of Pocket Productions

"Kenny's Angels" is a captivating play set against the vibrant backdrop of 1980s Staten Island, primarily within the transformed Old Pancake Corral, once known as Barry's Luau. The narrative centers around three remarkable women, Diane, Teresa, and Mary, each confronting unique challenges in their lives.

Diane, a reformed drug addict, navigates the complexities of motherhood with a prodigious daughter. Her life takes an uproarious turn when she decides to hold up the telephone company and JC Penney with Civil War weapons, injecting an unexpected twist into her journey of redemption and adding a hilarious touch to the storyline.

Teresa, a pre-med college student, ties the knot with an evangelist and establishes her own ministry for battered women. Despite facing a dark episode of spousal abuse, including a comically absurd typewriter assault from her husband, Teresa persists in her mission to support other abused women, blending moments of pathos with brilliant comic relief.

Mary, a resilient woman facing three cancer diagnoses, defies the odds and rebuilds her life. As a line-woman for the phone company, Mary overcomes a history of personal tragedy, including a series of absurd and humorous misfortunes such as a rape by her fiance's brother, her fiance's unexpected homosexuality, and her son's molestation by a trusted individual and brought to light by McGruff the Crime Dog. Against all odds, Mary emerges triumphant and finds herself on top of the world, infusing the storyline with both heartwarming resilience and comedic elements.

The play features a dynamic cast of supporting characters, including Lillian, a tough yet hilarious waitress, Kenny, the witty narrator and playwright, and Fran and Morty, old Jewish restaurant patrons who provide comic relief.

The intense bonds between these women are beautifully portrayed by Kenny, who skillfully weaves humor into their stories with immense love and admiration.

"Kenny's Angels" not only explores the challenges faced by its characters but also highlights the strength and resilience within each woman, punctuating the narrative with moments of laughter. Set against the unique atmosphere of a transformed 1980s Staten Island space, the play takes the audience on a rollercoaster journey through the highs and lows of these women's lives, celebrating their triumphs and emphasizing the enduring power of friendship, resilience, and a good dose of humor.

The play is enriched by a cast of compelling supporting characters, including Lillian, a tough waitress, Kenny, the narrator and playwright, and Fran and Morty, old restaurant patrons, among others.

Available Roles

  • Lillian/Fran/Mrs Martineau: Lillian is played as mid 60’s, brash, blonde, gum-cracking waitress. Elaine Stritch is the best comparison for this character. Fran is also a senior Citizen but is reminiscent of the mother on the sitcom the Nanny, and Mrs. Martineau is from the same universe as all three. This can be played by any age—just need to age up the makeup and costume.

  • Theresa Marciello/Marcy: Age span is 19 to 28, She should be played as a very reserved well meaning young woman. She is feminine in appearance but not always in mannerisms as she is the only girl raised by an absentee mom, a gambling dad and 5 brothers. Marcy is 20’s to 30’s typical of the 80's bridge and tunnel crowd, has a terrible attitude bothered by everything and everyone.

  • Dianne Orlack: Diane is 30 but looks like she’s 50. She has all appearances of someone who has done hard drugs. She has bad teeth, she is thin or slight wears baggy clothes to hide her figure or lack their of, her hair is stringy and she looks like she is always ready for a fight. If Diane were an animal she would be a feral black cat with a cauliflower ear and one fang.

  • Mary O’Hagan: Mary is a Catholic school girl with an edge. She is sweet but she has a side that comes with a temper. She should be played 18 to 28 years old

  • Kenny/Bob: 19 -25 student and friendly with all of the ladies- not a lady’s man but more like their best girlfriends. Average guy-- Kenny is not intentionally effeminate-- he's somewhere in the middle-- you know he's gay-- but-- he's not to be played as a characature. Bob is your College bro of the 80's.

  • Morty/Peppe/Mr. Martineau/Company: Morty is part of the quintessential Jewish couple who are fixtures at the Corral. Peppe is Diane’s Husband—Gangsta like with JET BLACK wig—not real hair obvious toupee. Mr. Martineau is a man with a speech impediment who speaks slowly he’s older and annoying—he’s a regular with his wife at the Corral he wears a hat even indoors.

  • Margie/Carol/Company: Margie is Diane’s daughter and she is mature for her age, Carol is a young woman who thinks highly of herself—big 80’s hair and lots of Jewelry.

  • John/Audell//Bill: Audell: The Epitome of Texas football player with southern charm—accent is from Savannah not Texas. John is nondescript working class 30’s to 40’s, and Bill is 30’s man who is just “adorkable”

About Out of Pocket Productions

Out of Pocket is not a new entity. Formed in 1997 by Chris-James Cognetta, and Bill Otstott, the founders had come straight out of the beloved Pocket Sandwich Theatre in Dallas. Looking for a space to workshop and create new works and to work on “Pet Projects” In 2006 Cognetta’s work “Kenny’s Angels” was optioned for production for a period of 5 years. The production never came to fruition. Out of Pocket went dark as both of the founders went on to other projects.

Fast forward to 2023— Out of Pocket dusts off its shelves and looks to bring together local artists in a creative setting to produce works in the Dallas metro area. Whether it’s sketches, or a full-length play, or a mainstream play that hasn’t seen the light of day in years— that’s what we are creating.

2024 will mark our first year, with a Staged Reading of Kenny’s Angels, and then a mainstream production to be determined. We will be staffing our Board of Directors and filing our 501 c 3 not for profit status in the New Year interested parties can reach out to info@outofpocketpro.org for more information.
